A Season of Clearing

February often feels like an in-between season. Winter hasn’t fully released its grip, spring still feels far away, and Lent quietly approaches. It’s not a month of big reveals or bold beginnings—but it is a season of preparation.

And preparation, in God’s economy, is rarely flashy.

Lent invites us into a kind of clearing. Not a hurried purge or a checklist of things to give up, but a slower, more intentional making room. Room in our schedules. Room in our hearts. Room in our expectations. It’s a season that asks us to loosen our grip on what distracts or weighs us down so that what truly matters can take root.

Growth, after all, doesn’t happen in the open right away.

Seeds begin their work in the dark—through dirt and shadow—stretching quietly toward the light. Much of our faith journey looks the same. God often does His deepest work in us before we can see where it’s leading.

When we hear “clearing,” it’s easy to think of loss or deprivation. But spiritually speaking, clearing is an act of trust. It’s choosing to release what no longer serves God’s purpose in our lives so that something new can grow.

This might look like:

• Letting go of habits that crowd out prayer
• Releasing the pressure to do everything instead of what God is truly calling us to do
• Stepping back from expectations—our own or others’—that keep us from serving with joy

Lent reminds us that faithfulness isn’t measured by busyness. It’s measured by attentiveness to Christ.

For women in LWML, service is second nature. We plan, organize, pray, give, and show up—often without recognition. But even good service can become heavy when it’s fueled by obligation rather than calling.

This season of clearing invites us to pause and ask:

• Where is God already at work, and how can I join Him there?
• What can I release so that my service is rooted in joy, not exhaustion?
• How might God be reshaping my role in this season of life?

Service that flows from a cleared, prayerful heart is sustainable. It allows us to serve not from pressure, but from purpose.

We live in a culture that values quick results and visible outcomes. But Lent teaches us to value faithfulness in slow motion. God is not rushed. He is not hindered by quiet seasons or unseen progress.

Like the sea shaping the shore over time, God works steadily—unraveling what needs to be undone and strengthening what He intends to keep. Our calling is not to force growth, but to trust the One who brings it.

As we move through February and toward Lent, consider this season an invitation—not to do more, but to clear space. Space for prayer. Space for listening. Space for service that aligns with where God is leading now.

What God grows next will come in His time. Our role is to tend the soil.

And even when the work feels slow or hidden, we can trust that He is bringing life—one faithful step at a time.
