The Joy of Christian Fellowship and Worship

By Elise Spleiss

The theme for this final article about the convention held in Sacramento, CA, last April is the joy of Christian fellowship, worship and times of prayer that bind us as sisters in Christ. Reflecting on the three days, I saw different forms of worship show up in various ways. In addition to the two traditional worship services, we worshipped with songfests, offerings, and in-gathering donations for the shower and homeless ministries. Even our fellowship and camaraderie with new friends brought us closer to our Lord during the weekend.

After returning home, many memories remain. We pray these memories inspire us as we go about our lives working at home, in our churches and LWML meetings, and serving our communities.

Music, worship, and joyful praise

We enjoyed music by leaders Kevin and Joy Hamby and Paul and Anjuli Casem from Messiah Lutheran in Citrus Heights, CA. They played for the songfests throughout the weekend, and worship leader Kevin Hamby also played the piano for the worship services. Hamby’s infusion of jazz to the music was a bright point for all, even recognized by outgoing President Roxan in her concluding remarks.

Giving that became hands-on service

Our offerings and donations are a form of prayer, turning our devotion into tangible action. Three offerings taken during the convention help support: 2026 CNH Mites, Steinbeck Scholarships, and the Rubin Perpetual Memorial Fund.

The ingathering of food items created 258 Blessing Bags for the homeless which attendees could take home to distribute. The ingathering of hygiene and other items for Mercy Holistic Ministry, which supports the homeless, filled a minivan plus a large pick-up truck. Cash and check donations were also offered.

Learning, laughter, and fellowship

Breakout sessions provided both learning and fellowship. A favorite session was given by inspirational speaker Sue Xiong who explained little-known Hmong fashion, history, and culture, especially for women. Attendees became models for their colorful outfits as she explained the significance of each one. Sue also shared a powerful story of coming to faith.

Many enjoyed learning about our grant programs and other LWML CNH programs in our Exhibit Hall. A favorite was our own Lutheran Benjamin Franklin historian, bringing history to life for visitors. Note: In the future, be sure to check out the exhibit hall early as it is easy to pass it by and miss all the fun and free goodies.

Sent Out Refreshed in God’s Word

Finally, the convention closing/sending prayer reminded us: “Your [God’s] spirit speaks to us through Your word. We will continually refresh Your word to be in fellowship with our sisters and brothers in Christ.”
