Creative Ideas for Collecting Mites

If you are like many LWML groups, the ladies who are part of your LWML know about mites and regularly fill their mite boxes. But what about the rest of your congregation? Do they know about mites? In light of our upcoming LWML Sunday which will focus on Supporting Missions, here are some creative ways to educate your women (and men) on the significance of mites and how to collect those mites.

There are quite a few options for mite boxes. One of the best for church-wide collection is a large mite box that can be placed on a table in your narthex or lobby for easy access for anyone attending your church services. For individuals, there are small mite boxes for adults and children that can be handed out to anyone in your church. You can encourage them to fill them at home and then bring them to church and put the money collected in the large mite box. Finally, there is a mite purse (zippered coin holder) that is ideal for carrying in your purse to collect change as you are out and about. These are all available from the LWML Store at cph.com.

There are many ideas for ways to highlight your mite giving in church that are more engaging for your congregation. A few fun ideas are:

“Noisy” Mites – have a can or jar available to place your mites in. This is especially fun for children and can be used to encourage giving at all ages. Another idea that involves children is to have them bring the mites forward in a wagon or other wheeled toy.

“Impact” Sundays – choose one Sunday each month or quarter to highlight a current mission grant during the mite collection. See the LWML CNH Mission Grant list and the LWML CNH Mission Grant posters on the CNH LWML website.

Seasonal Ideas – For Thanksgiving, collect the mites in a basket filled with harvest decorations. For Christmas, use a decorated gift box to collect mite donations.

Monthly Mite Prayer Calendar – for each month, there is something specific to pray for each day, such as specific national grants and specific LWML districts, as well as different countries and other people in your community or church.
