I used it, along with my board, to plan our year at my home congregation. As we planned our year, we also found on the national website Mission Service Activity of the Month. It includes past activities and you can find programming help, prayers, etc. for each outreach program you choose…activities like Christmas Cookie Exchange, Fill Backpacks for the Homeless, Holiday Meal Baskets, and many more. The Zone 3 Fall Rally was held on October 18 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lodi, hosted by the Sewing Circle of Zion and the LWML Society of Valley Springs. The event’s theme was “God’s Advance Directives – Planning According to God’s Promises.”

Attendees received practical guidance and spiritual insight on end-of-life decisions from guest speakers Laura Kahler, Palliative Care Coordinator at St Joseph’s Medical Center, and Pastor Jason Weber of Zion, Lodi.

Highlights included the ingathering of gift baskets for Hospice of San Joaquin, hands-on activities such as sewing mini prayer quilts, and coloring gift cards for inclusion in the gift bags. The rally was led by Zone President Louise Rickey and Zone Counselor Pastor Ron Youngdale.

The October Rally at Grace Lutheran began with great refreshments and a church service to prepare us for focusing on missions and God’s love letters to us. The highlights were our two mission updates.

Hmong Outreach Ministries

Pastor Doua Xiong and Sue Xiong shared the progress of their Hmong Outreach Ministries at St. Paul Lutheran in Merced and Fresno. Supported by a $78,364 LWML grant (2021–2023), their work provides Christ-centered materials for Hmong language schools and outreach. Their ministry helps introduce the Hmong community—many of whom practice animism and shamanism—to Christianity. Since many adults do not speak English, language schools enable families to learn and share their faith together. Often, if one member of a family comes to faith, the entire family or clan will follow.

Sewing School, Matongo, Kenya

Jan Froh, VP of Gospel Outreach, presented updates on the sewing school for deaconesses in Matongo, Kenya. Jan and her husband Pastor Emeritus Charles Froh visited last August and were able to see first-hand what our mighty mites accomplish. The new facility features a kitchen and nine sewing machines. Graduates receive their own sewing machine with treadle. The program empowers deaconesses to make their own uniforms and stoles for pastors and is now a line item in the LCMS budget.

While in Matongo, Jan’s husband Charles and Dr. Tom Aadland led a four-day training session. The 300 pastors attending were all from ELCK (Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya). Jan enjoyed the opportunity to interact with so many of the pastors. She said, “I am very thankful that these men are faithful to God’s love letter.”

Financial Challenge

Jan Froh encouraged each Zone 19 congregation to contribute $34 monthly to reach District mite goals. If each congregation in every Zone were to do this, we would reach our District goal of $38,600.
