A Simple Way to Share the Meaning of Luther’s Rose
Contributed by Cathey King, Vice President of Christian Life
Reformation Sunday is coming in October, making September a great time to plan an activity that helps your LWML group explore — and share — the meaning behind Luther’s Rose.
Concordia Publishing House offers a Luther’s Rose Suncatcher Craft that can turn a simple craft project into an opportunity for fellowship and conversation about our Lutheran faith. Each 4.25-inch plastic suncatcher can be painted and hung in a window, and an accompanying leaflet explains the meaning and history behind Luther’s familiar seal.
Consider using the craft at an upcoming LWML meeting and pairing it with a short devotion or discussion about the meaning of Luther’s Rose. Or make it an opportunity to invite others to join you. Welcome women from your congregation, daughters and granddaughters, or families with children for a morning of fellowship, learning, and creativity.
Your LWML group could also use the craft as a simple gift to your congregation. Purchase the suncatchers and provide them to families to paint at home with their children or grandchildren. Include the explanatory leaflet and a short note from your LWML group inviting families to learn together about the symbols of Luther’s Rose as Reformation Sunday approaches.
Another possibility is to partner with your Sunday school or youth ministry. Your LWML group could provide the craft supplies and a few helping hands for a Reformation activity with the children.
However you use it, the craft itself is only the beginning. It provides a simple, hands-on way to start conversations about our Lutheran heritage, share our faith across generations, and invite others into fellowship.
Sometimes a little paint, a table full of women and children, and a familiar symbol of our faith are all you need to create a meaningful Christian Life activity.
The Luther’s Rose Suncatcher Craft is available from Concordia Publishing House in packages of 12. Paint and brushes are not included.
